We’re living through an extraordinary time, where most of us are now working from home to protect ourselves and others. We’ve created some useful tips on how to make the most of your time at home and ensure that you still feel connected to your colleagues and reduce any feelings of isolation or loneliness.

1. Create a workspace

Working from home can mean distractions are easier to come by, so by creating a workspace, it enables you to separate your professional and personal life and switch off at the end of the day.

We’d recommend working from a table where possible, to help maintain a good posture and create a similar working environment to what you’re used to.

2. Stick to a routine

It can be tempting to stay in bed a little later, and there’s nothing wrong with a lie-in on the odd occasion but try to start and finish your working day as per your normal working hours.

Even though you may not have the usual commute into the office, try to get up around the same time every day, this helps to stabilise your internal body clock and will help you to maintain good sleep patterns overall.

3. Get some exercise

With no gyms or leisure centres open, it can be easy to slip out of your usual workout regime. Exercise helps to positively stimulate your body and mind, resulting in better mental and physical health, so try and get a half an hour session in where possible.

There’s lots of home workouts that you can try using apps or follow simple videos on YouTube. If you can, get some fresh air on your lunch break and help rejuvenate your mind ready for the afternoon.

4. Schedule in calls

Working from home can be lonely, especially if you live on your own. Human connections are so important, so make sure you check in with colleagues, to chat about workload and how you’re getting on with things at home.

There’s lots of apps to choose from to help you stay connected, including Google Hangout, Microsoft Teams, Skype and WhatsApp.

5. Take regular breaks

To keep your mind on track, fuel your brain with regular breaks. Whether this is just getting up to make a cup of tea, or maybe even some desk yoga, make sure to take a breather every 60 to 90 minutes. It’s important to give your eyes a break from staring at the screen and keep your muscles moving.
