Beat the January Blues: A founder’s guide to surviving (and thriving) after the festive highs

Beat the January Blues: A founder’s guide to surviving (and thriving) after the festive highs

By Lucy Eden, Founder of Be in your Element

January. The month that somehow feels both long and short. The glitter of the holiday season has faded, the celebrations are over, and suddenly we’re staring at grey skies, cold mornings, and a diary that’s already jam-packed with meetings, pitches, and planning sessions for the year ahead.

Having spent over twenty years in the events industry, I know this feeling all too well. I’ve lived through the dizzying highs of December’s celebrations, designing spectacular events, managing teams, and keeping every detail in perfect sync, only to crash into January with a quiet, creeping sense of low mood. The events world doesn’t stop for the winter; if anything, the pressure to deliver, to perform, to stay “on” at 1000% capacity, feels relentless. And yet, the human body and mind are wired for something different: winter is a season for slowing, softening, and restoring.

So how do we reconcile the two, the demands of work and the natural need to reset? Over the years, both as an event professional and as someone who now delivers wellbeing experiences to workplaces and organisations, I’ve found four pillars that really help to combat the January blues:

1. Smart Goal-Setting

January is the classic time for resolutions, but let’s be honest: vague promises to “exercise more” or “eat better” rarely stick. The key is specificity. Break down your goals into small, actionable steps. For example, instead of aiming to “move more,” commit to a 20-minute walk each morning before emails start rolling in. Small wins build momentum, and trust me, momentum is the antidote to that sluggish, post-festive slump.

2. Nourish Your Body

The festive period is full of indulgence, and while treats are part of life, January is a perfect time to reclaim balance. Focus on nutrient-dense foods: leafy greens, warming soups, whole grains, and seasonal fruits. Hydrate. Your energy levels, mood, and focus are all rooted in what you put on your plate. I often remind myself and my clients: food is not just fuel, it’s medicine, mood, and motivation rolled into one.

3. Move Your Body

Movement doesn’t have to be a gruelling gym session. The key is consistency. Even a short, brisk walk outside, a stretch at your desk, or a 15-minute yoga session can dramatically lift your energy and clarity. After years in events, I’ve learned that movement breaks are not indulgent, they are essential. They interrupt the mental hamster wheel and restore a sense of balance.

4. Embrace the Outdoors

I cannot stress this enough: daylight is a precious commodity in winter. Exposure to natural light, even for a few minutes, helps regulate your circadian rhythm, boosts vitamin D levels, and lifts mood. When the schedule is relentless, I schedule outdoor meetings or simply step outside between calls. It feels revolutionary, even if it’s just a ten-minute pause in the fresh air.

It’s tempting to push, push, push, especially after a season of celebration and client expectations. But January is a natural reset. The blues aren’t a failure; they’re your body and mind’s way of asking for care. By setting achievable goals, nourishing yourself, moving your body, and stepping into the light, you can turn what often feels like a bleak month into one of clarity, energy, and calm momentum.

At Be in your Element, we specialise in creating wellbeing-focused experiences for workplaces and events, because we know first-hand that the highs of celebration can come with lows if we don’t pause and care for ourselves. So, this January, be gentle. Move a little. Eat mindfully. Step outside. And watch how these simple actions can transform your winter from surviving to thriving.
