Learning both ways: What new and seasoned planners wish you knew
The events world thrives on shared knowledge – but valuable advice doesn’t only come from those with decades of experience. Fresh perspectives matter just as much. Seasoned professionals offer depth and expertise, while newcomers bring first-hand insight into today’s challenges, expectations, and ways of working. Together, both viewpoints reveal lessons that can benefit anyone in the industry.
Here, two event professionals at different stages in their careers share the advice that’s helped shaped their careers…
Neda Tootoonchi, Director, Falkenberg & Florence – 25 years’ industry experience:
“If you haven’t worked on the venue side before, do; it will completely change the way you think. Understanding the operational side of the business will make you a far more perceptive venue finder. That insight will help you ask better questions, set clearer expectations, give better advice to your clients and support your venue partners. It turns you from someone who just books spaces into someone who works as an extension of both the client and the venue team and truly understands how a venue runs and clients feel that difference immediately.”
While Neda emphasises the importance of understanding venues from the inside, Iulia highlights the everyday discipline of clarity and communication.
Iulia Zorzoana, Events Coordinator, STEP – three years’ industry experience:
“The best piece of advice I was given very early in my career was ‘never assume.’ It came from my previous boss, who was also a real role model. When I started in the industry, I felt that everyone else was more experienced. I assumed they knew exactly what to deliver and when. I was shy about chasing for updates or asking questions. But as an Events Manager, clarity is crucial. Just because someone has more experience, it doesn’t mean their work shouldn’t be checked. Never assume everything will be delivered on time, that an invoice is correct, or an agenda doesn’t have any mistakes. Always check, and don’t be afraid to ask questions.”
